about

The theme was "Dark Songs" and, while there are plenty of metaphorically dark songs, I fancied one about actual darkness. Admittedly, it's still a tad gloomy, what with the moaning about the eternal and unavoidable truth that just because you love a person, they're not obliged to love you back. At least nobody's dead or forced into a bad marriage at the end of it, which is a pretty happy ending as traditional songs go.

It's from the singing of Peter Bellamy on the glorious “Both Sides Then”. It's as fine a collection of floating verses as you'll come across this side of “The Water Is Wide”, but they've been beautifully strung together and put to a gorgeous tune.

For the #TradSongTues video, I went with the solo vocal, but I also recorded some harmonies as well, and that's the version here.

lyrics

A roving on a winter's night
A drinking good old wine
Just thinking all about that pretty little girl
She stole this heart of mine

She is just like the bud of rose
That blooms in the month of June
She is like some musical instrument
Been lately placed in tune

So perhaps it is a trip to a foreign land
Some trip to France or Spain
Yet though I go 10,000 miles
I'm coming back again

Tell me who is going to shoe your pretty little food
Tell me who's gonna glove your tiny hand
And who is going to kiss your sweet, sweet lips
Tell me who will be your man

I'll love you 'til all the seas run dry
And the rocks all melt in the sun
I'll love you 'til the day I die
Though you'll never be my own

A roving on a winter's night
And a drinking good old wine
Just a thinking all about that pretty little girl
She broke this heart of mine
